Dr. Susan Barrett has a special interest in dermatology and attends many hours of continuing education yearly to keep current on the latest treatment protocols and therapy for your dog and cat. We offer the newest biologic called Cytopoint, a non sting injection of an antibody which neutralizes cytokines, which are substances released from cells which cause itching and inflammation. Cytokine is given according to your dog’s weight and stops itching and redness of the skin within hours, has no side effects, can be used safely with any other medications and does not affect the liver or kidney. Cytopoint lasts 1 to 2 months and it is made by zoetis labs which makes apoquel , a drug that has been used in the past. Cytopoint is now replacing apoquel which can have side effects. Once we have seen a dog and cleared the skin of any bacterial or yeast infection and gotten any fleas or mites under control a client can bring in a dog as needed for another injection without an office visit for a year until the next visit. We will thoroughly teach you how to care for dog’s skin and to prevent the following causes:
Give Cytopoint and as needed every 4 to 6 weeks
Fleas: treat the home and yard montly of every other month by a professional exterminator; we recommend vectra or revolution monthly which is topical only (no bravecto or triflexis or pills which can be dangerous)
Pollen/mold: common in the sacramento valley; we can send a blood sample to a lab and find out what your dog is allergic to; dogs have allergic dermatitis between 1 and 3 years of age; keep home dust free and dog bathed and wipes after outdoors. Contact allergy to grass or carpet; wipe down dog and regular baths; Seborrhea in spaniels; treat with cytopoint and proper shampoo
Mites: sarcoptes, demodex and fur mites; ivermectin is treatment and shampoo
Poor grooming habits: dogs need a moisture bath 1-2 times a month and daily brushing and combing and a moisture spray and omega fa
Impetigo in puppies: a staph infection from moist skin
Ringworm (a contagious fungus): fungal culture and treat with ketoconazole
